Plot Summary:

If you know these SAW films at all then you know that giving away too much of the plot would lead me to a quick demise, maybe at the hands of some twisted game, so we’ll tread lightly. Jigsaw and his Robin, Amanda, are now dead. Dead as people can get actually. Now, with bodies everywhere, Detective Hoffan must figure out what in the hell is going on. The second storyline, which is the more prominent one, follows SWAT Commander Rigg through one of Jigsaw’s final tests. The big sexy black man is given ninety-minutes to find various victims before they all wind up on a gurney with their balls hanging out.

Jigsaw breathing a little easier these days. Yes, he's really dead. (I Think)

The Review:

One thing I’ve got to mention before we get too far into this is that I’ve held a grudge toward the storylines of the past SAW films. It’s plainly obvious that the writers, producers, and directors were trying desperately to piece together a bunch of plot points that made one coherent story. To make matters worse it seemed like every film ended with no intention of the story ever continuing. I’m pretty much referring to Jigsaw dying from cancer, which seems to be the overall problem here. When the film makes eighty-million at the box office the producers say “Oh shit! Now what the fuck are we going to do?”

Well thankfully that streak seems to be over with. SAW 3 killed at the box office and the producers were definitely anticipating this, which is great for us because they definitely had some tricks up their sleeves. SAW 4 is fucking tight. Fans of the films can now watch SAW 3 and SAW 4 and it’s feels like one entity. I’ve watched both SAW 3 and SAW 4 a few times this week, with the commentary tracks as well and I know there’s still more shit I could pick up with another viewing. I think we’re safe from here on as well because from listening to the commentary tracks it seems like the producers have storylines all the way up to part six and then some. Sweet!

Cast member's name who wouldn't couldn't find knocking on deaths door

I also noticed that SAW 4 takes things down a notch, most noticeably the traps. All the devices Jigsaw (or who ever the fuck is making them at this point) makes are far more manageable and realistic than in the previous films. The traps in SAW 4 are devices that an engineer could whip together within a few weeks on a minimal budget as apposed to traps in SAW 3, which would require a team, thousands of bucks and some hunky-ass-men to move them. The filmmakers also make an effort to point out that Jigsaw is an engineer. He’s even on the cover of engineering magazines, which we see. The detectives also question how John manages to moves these traps from his warehouse to their final destination. So you can see the filmmakers are really trying to nail down these details and make the SAW world as believable as possible, which is one of the reasons I feel the franchise is succeeding and will continue to succeed.

Two men in a green room. (Yes, a tad vague, but what do you want? Spoilers bitches!!!)

There are only a few negative comments I have about the film, the first being the ending. The final twist was a stroke of genius, and I feel comfortable using that word here, but how things went down with certain characters just wasn’t really my cup of tea. I obviously can’t go into detail, but as a viewer I wasn’t left satisfied. My second complaint is the continuity errors. At one point in the film a character’s mouth is severely damaged by a trap. We see this character later in the film and the scar is across his cheek instead of his lips. The continuity was so bad that I didn’t even think it was the same guy. I mean, how could it be, his mouth looks perfect? Come to find out it was the same guy. Things like this happen because the SAW films are literally cranked out within a matter of months, so it makes perfect sense and is almost acceptable (I say almost here) why these continuity flaws exist. But to have one this big is just plain confusing, CG that shit bitches!

Detective Hoffman thinking about the big ass dump he needs to take

Overall Thoughts:

I was pretty damn impressed with SAW 4. If you don’t like any of the SAW films then I wouldn’t jump in the series now because on some level it’s still more of the same, but if you’ve been on the fence like me then you’ve got to check this one out. I would suggest watching SAW 3 immediately before this one. You’ll be glad you did. In general I’m really excited about this series and what the filmmakers are doing. I don’t think we’ve seen anything yet. Just don’t bring Jigsaw back to life via a rusty cemetery pole and some good old fashioned lightning.
